New York Surpasses Nevada in Gambling Arrests in 2023: Report
A recent report by WalletHub has revealed that New York has surpassed Nevada in terms of gambling-related arrests in 2023. The study also highlighted the states with the highest rates of gambling addiction in the USA.
New York Takes the Lead in Gambling Crimes
Despite legalizing sports betting just three years ago, New York has quickly become one of the largest gaming markets in the country. The state now leads in sports betting and daily fantasy sports participation. With such a high level of interest in gambling, it is not surprising that New York also ranks first in illegal gambling and gambling-related arrests.
According to the latest FBI data, New York saw 339 arrests for gambling offenses in 2023, surpassing Nevada’s 236 arrests by over a hundred. This significant increase in arrests reflects the state’s growing issue with illegal gambling activities.
Common offenses include storefront operations that host illegal gaming activities in their backrooms, with some being linked to organized crime. Analysts believe that New York’s history of organized crime makes it difficult to eliminate the black market completely.
Nevada Tops the List for Gambling Addiction
WalletHub’s study also identified Nevada as the state with the highest rates of gambling addiction. This ranking can be attributed to the state’s numerous casinos and deep-rooted gambling traditions. Nevada also scored first in terms of gambling friendliness and problem gambling treatment.
Following Nevada on the list was South Dakota, which ranked second both in gambling friendliness and addiction rates. However, the state lagged behind in terms of problem gambling treatment, coming in at 15th place.
Rounding up the top five states with high rates of gambling addiction were Montana, Pennsylvania, and Mississippi, each with varying levels of gambling friendliness and treatment options.
On the other hand, Utah was identified as the least addicted state, despite being the most unfriendly towards the gambling industry. Alaska ranked 49th in addiction rates and 48th in gambling friendliness. Both states tied for the 12th spot in terms of problem gambling treatment.
Expert Insights on Gambling Addiction
Analysts emphasize the impact of gambling addiction on individuals, including health issues, job losses, relationship strains, and in extreme cases, criminal behavior or suicidal thoughts. The study suggests that living in a state with fewer gambling opportunities may be beneficial for those struggling with gambling addiction.
