South Korean Authorities Bust Illegal Gambling Ring Targeting School Children
In a recent crackdown, South Korean authorities have successfully dismantled an illegal gambling ring that specifically targeted school children and adults, resulting in a staggering $18.2 million in placed wagers. The operation, which involved multiple individuals, managed to ensnare more than 100 middle and high school students in illegal gambling activities.
Illegal Gambling Operation Exposed
According to a statement released by the Suwon District Prosecutors’ Office, four suspects, including a 27-year-old alleged ringleader, have been apprehended in connection with the illicit gambling ring. The operation predominantly took place online, with the suspects being charged with the offense of “opening a gaming venue.”
A police officer commented on the case, highlighting the severe social consequences of gambling, especially on teenagers who may develop addictive behaviors. The officer emphasized the importance of steering clear of illegal gambling websites to avoid facing legal penalties.
The suspects reportedly operated the illegal gambling website from an apartment building in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi, between February 2023 and December 2023. One of the suspects was responsible for recruiting new gamblers nationwide, specifically targeting teenagers aged 13 to 18, to participate in online gambling activities.
It was revealed that the recruiter would take a 20% cut from the losses incurred by the gamblers on slot games. Over 2,000 individuals were known to have used the website, with approximately 100 of them being school children. The youngest user identified was a first-year middle school student who reportedly lost around 1.2 million won, equivalent to approximately $877.
Legal Consequences Await the Culprits
The individuals involved in the illegal gambling ring are now facing serious legal repercussions for their actions. If found guilty, they could potentially serve up to five years in prison and face fines of up to 30 million won (approximately $21,830). Additionally, participating in gambling activities could result in fines of around 10 million won or $7,000.
