Sandy Seda, the former security chief at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, has been granted a lifeline in the gaming industry as the Nevada Gaming Commission recently overturned a previous decision to suspend his gaming registration.
Narrow 3-2 Vote Allows Seda to Reapply for Work
The decision to overturn the suspension, made in a narrow 3-2 vote, now paves the way for Seda to reapply for work in the gaming sector. The Nevada Gaming Control Board had initially suspended Seda’s registration following allegations of spousal abuse, which Seda vehemently denied.
During a 35-minute hearing before the Commission, Seda contested the accusations and later pleaded guilty to disturbing the peace in November. However, the conviction did not fall under a felony, gross misdemeanor, or crime of moral turpitude, providing him with an opportunity to return to the industry.
Strong Support from Criminal Defense Attorney
Seda, a former Marine who served in Iraq and ex-police chief at UNLV and the College of Southern Nevada, received strong backing from his criminal defense attorney, Michael Becker. Becker emphasized that Seda’s suspension was based on allegations rather than a final legal decision.
“This was certainly the low point for Mr. Seda. His marriage fell apart, and he was in a toxic relationship that resulted in charges being filed and later dismissed. The only thing on his record is disturbing the peace,” Becker stated.
Commission’s Decision Sparks Debate
Despite the emotional nature of the case, the Commission’s three-member majority felt that the evidence presented was inconclusive and voted to overturn the suspension. Two dissenting votes from retired judges argued that the allegations should not be disregarded.
Seda remained adamant in his innocence, stating, “I’ve never touched her. I know better than that. I’m a good man and a good father.” The Commission members acknowledged the seriousness of domestic violence but highlighted the challenges of proving unverified accusations.
