MIXI Australia Increases Offer to Acquire PointsBet
The Australian branch of the Japanese technology giant MIXI has recently revised its proposal to acquire PointsBet, a prominent Australian sportsbook, by offering a more attractive price. This development comes as PointsBet evaluates a separate takeover bid from Betr Australia, adding excitement to the ongoing acquisition discussions in the gambling industry.
MIXI’s Initial Proposal and Competing Offers
In February 2025, MIXI Australia initially presented a bid to acquire PointsBet for approximately AUD 353 million. This offer followed a competing proposal from BlueBet, another significant player in the Australian sports betting market, which suggested an acquisition price of AUD 340 million.
Subsequently, Betr Entertainment, the company that acquired BlueBet in 2024, threw its hat into the ring by submitting a revised offer for PointsBet in April. Their proposal valued PointsBet at AUD 360 million, consisting of AUD 260 million in cash and AUD 100 million in Betr shares. Betr also highlighted potential synergies that could amount to over AUD 40 million annually, promising a value outcome of AUD 1.33 per share for PointsBet shareholders.
MIXI’s Updated Offer
Responding to Betr’s bid, MIXI recently announced an increase in its proposed acquisition price for PointsBet to AUD 398 million, equivalent to $258 million. The decision was made by MIXI’s board, signaling their strong interest in acquiring PointsBet and expanding their presence in the Australian gambling market.
If approved, the acquisition will be executed through a Scheme of Arrangement (SOA) in accordance with the Australian Corporations Act. A Scheme Meeting has been scheduled for June 25, with the implementation of the SOA expected on July 8, subject to various approvals.
MIXI emphasized that the proposed timeline could be subject to changes based on different factors, including the approval of PointsBet’s shareholders and regulatory authorities. In the event that the SOA fails to secure the necessary approvals, MIXI hinted at the possibility of considering an off-market takeover as an alternative approach.
PointsBet has not ruled out either MIXI’s revised offer or Betr Entertainment’s proposal, indicating that the acquisition discussions are still ongoing and that further developments could be expected in the near future.
