Five Arrested in Sarasota County for Involvement in Illegal Gambling Businesses
Five individuals have been arrested in Sarasota County, Florida for their suspected involvement in illegal gambling businesses. The arrests were made following a joint operation between local law enforcement and the Florida Gaming Control Commission (FGCC), the state’s gambling regulator.
Joint Operation Leads to Arrests
According to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO), a joint operation with the FGCC resulted in the arrest of five individuals aged between 26 and 44. While five suspects are in custody, a sixth suspect with the initials I.L. remains at large with an active arrest warrant.
The arrested individuals include E.G., 26 years old, S.B., 29 years old, C.B., 34 years old from Sarasota, along with I.I., 44 years old from Addison, Illinois, and C.M., 42 years old from Port Charlotte.
Ross Marshman, acting executive director of the FGCC, expressed delight in collaborating with the SCSO to target those responsible for illegal slot machines. He emphasized the lack of customer protection in such illegal gambling devices.
Sheriff Kurt A. Hoffman of the SCSO mentioned that they have received numerous complaints about illegal gambling venues in Sarasota County and emphasized that this recent operation is just the beginning of cracking down on such activities.
Nearly 60 Illegal Gambling Machines Seized
During the operation, law enforcement seized nearly 60 illegal gambling machines. Unlike previous raids, this time, criminal enterprise charges were filed under Florida’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act against the suspects. The charges include maintaining a gambling establishment, money laundering, and possession of a slot machine.
It was reported that last month, seven businesses in North and Central Florida were also raided for illegal gambling, resulting in the confiscation of illegal gambling machines and cash, along with Notices to Appear issued to store owners and managers.
The investigation that led to these arrests began in April 2024 after receiving information about multiple illegal gambling venues in Sarasota County. The police obtained arrest and search warrants and proceeded to shut down the illegal operations. One suspect, however, remains at large.
