Investor Tilman Fertitta has raised concerns about the management of Wynn Resorts and the performance of its stock. This comes after Nevada regulators confirmed his eligibility to remain the company’s largest shareholder.
Fertitta, who holds approximately 12.3% of Wynn’s stock, has recently expressed dissatisfaction with the company’s leadership. During a hearing at the Nevada Gaming Control Board, Steven Scheinthal, the General Counsel for Fertitta Entertainment, represented Fertitta and conveyed his displeasure with the company’s recent decisions and the decline in stock price. Fertitta himself was not present at the meeting, as he has relocated to Italy to assume his new role as the US ambassador to Italy and San Marino.
Despite stepping back from actively managing his business interests in compliance with federal ethics regulations, Fertitta retains ownership of shares and continues to receive dividends. Scheinthal emphasized Fertitta’s growing concerns about the performance of his investment in Wynn.
During the hearing, Scheinthal highlighted Fertitta’s dissatisfaction with the stock price and the current management’s decision-making. Wynn’s stock, which was valued at over $130 in 2021, has dropped below $87 in recent weeks.
Fertitta’s grievances appear to stem from financial issues and past regulatory violations. He was particularly displeased with Wynn’s recent $130 million payment to the federal government and a $5.5 million fine imposed by Nevada authorities for failing to prevent money laundering, stemming from longstanding issues including dealings with unlicensed money transmitting businesses.
Scheinthal indicated that Fertitta believes these regulatory violations point to oversight failures within the company and expressed confidence that the situation would be different if he were in charge.
Despite his frustrations, Fertitta remains optimistic about Wynn’s expansion into international markets. He is particularly enthusiastic about the upcoming $5.1 billion resort on Al Marjan Island in the UAE, scheduled to open in 2027, believing it will enhance the company’s value for shareholders.
As he assumes his ambassadorial role, Fertitta has relinquished his executive positions in his businesses. However, he intends to remain involved in shaping strategies from a distance. His ex-wife, Paige Fertitta, has taken over leadership at Fertitta Entertainment while he is abroad.
