AUSTRAC Initiates “Use it or Lose it” Campaign for Inactive Digital Currency Exchanges and Crypto ATM Providers
The Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC) has recently launched a campaign targeting inactive digital currency exchange (DCE) firms and crypto ATM providers. The regulatory body has urged these businesses to either utilize their registrations or risk having them canceled.
High Number of Inactive DCEs
Currently, there are 427 registered DCEs in Australia, but not all of them are active. AUSTRAC has expressed concern over the significant number of inactive firms operating in a high-risk sector. The center believes that inactive businesses could potentially be acquired and exploited by criminal elements.
According to Brendan Thomas, the CEO of AUSTRAC, registered DCE firms are required to keep their details updated, even if they are no longer offering services. The recent campaign aims to safeguard the DCE sector from being used for illicit activities by criminals.
Preventing Criminal Exploitation
Thomas emphasized the need to prevent criminals from exploiting cryptocurrency for money laundering, scams, and other illicit activities. By canceling the registrations of inactive DCE businesses, AUSTRAC aims to strengthen the sector’s integrity and reduce vulnerabilities that could be exploited by criminals.
The regulatory body has the authority to cancel registrations if there are reasonable grounds to believe that a business is no longer providing DCE services. AUSTRAC has encouraged inactive firms to contact them to cancel their registrations, assuring them that they can re-apply for registration if circumstances change.
Establishing a Publicly Searchable DCE Register
Aside from addressing inactive DCE services, AUSTRAC plans to establish a publicly searchable DCE register. This register will allow citizens to verify the legitimacy of cryptocurrency providers and ensure they are subject to regulatory oversight.
