ACMA Blocks Two More Offshore Casinos Violating Australian Law
The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has recently announced that it has taken action against two more offshore online casinos that were found to be operating in breach of Australian law. The two websites in question are Crown Slots and Billy Billion.
ACMA’s Action
The ACMA stated that both offshore operators had violated the Interactive Gambling Act 2001, prompting the regulatory action. As a result, the authority has requested Australian internet service providers (ISPs) to block the domains of these online casinos. The ACMA emphasized that website blocking is just one of the enforcement options it has at its disposal to protect Australia’s gaming market.
Since November 2019, the ACMA has been actively blocking illicit offshore operators. To date, a total of 1,178 illegal gambling and affiliate websites have been blocked. Additionally, 220 illegal services have voluntarily exited the Australian market under the ACMA’s enforcement.
Recent Actions
In February, the ACMA took action against eight more offshore operators, including JokaRoom, AUDPokies888, Aura Play, Instant Casino, Leon, Rich Papa, UUSpin, and Wild Pokies, which were also blocked in Australia.
While online gambling is illegal in Australia, offshore companies have been trying to access the market. The ACMA has been issuing blocking requests against online casino operators to prevent them from exploiting Australian players and avoiding competition from licensed gaming services.
Consumer Protection
The ACMA reminded players to remain cautious as online gaming services, even if they appear legitimate, are illegal in Australia. The authority emphasized that even the best offshore websites are unlikely to provide important consumer protections that licensed gaming services offer. ACMA Identifies Violation by Network 10
In addition to its efforts to block offshore online casinos, the ACMA is also responsible for ensuring compliance with gambling advertising regulations within Australia. In February, the ACMA found that Ten Network, the Australian commercial television network under the ownership of Ten Network Holdings, had violated the regulations during its coverage of the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix in March 2024.
Ten Network aired four gambling advertisements during the first practice round of the Grand Prix, despite strict rules prohibiting such ads during sporting events between 5:00 am and 8:30 pm. The incident was attributed to human error, and Network 10 has taken measures to prevent such violations in the future.
As the battle against illegal gambling continues, authorities are not only focused on online casinos but also on the underground gaming sector, working to protect Australian consumers and uphold the country’s gambling laws.
