A senior Buddhist monk at Wat Rai Khing, one of Nakhon Pathom’s most prominent temples, is facing allegations of embezzling hundreds of millions of baht to fuel his online gambling addiction. The 70-year-old monk, identified only as P.D.W., who also serves as the ecclesiastical governor for Region 14, turned himself in to authorities at the Central Investigation Bureau in Bangkok on Thursday morning.
Upon his surrender, the Criminal Court approved an arrest warrant for the abbot following a thorough investigation that uncovered evidence of financial misconduct within the temple. It is believed that P.D.W. diverted at least 300 million baht ($9.06 million) from temple funds into his personal bank account to gamble on online baccarat.
The investigation was initiated after authorities received a tip-off about suspicious financial transactions linked to the temple. Undercover officers from the Crime Suppression Division were deployed at the temple for eight months, during which they discovered a significant amount of money being transferred from the temple’s accounts to the abbot’s personal account and then onto online gambling platforms.
The abbot allegedly collaborated with a female broker to facilitate the transfers, with an estimated total of over 500 million baht ($15.1 million) passing through his personal account. As the temple’s funds depleted, P.D.W. resorted to borrowing money from other senior monks, ranging from 100,000 to 1 million baht ($3,000 to $30,000).
Arrest of Female Broker Linked to Gambling Site
The female broker, identified as 28-year-old A.W., was arrested in Pattaya after police traced a 100 million baht transfer from the temple’s account to her. A.W. had previous involvement with the gambling site LaGalaxy911, raising suspicions of her role in facilitating the illegal money transfers.
Wat Rai Khing, known for its widespread donations and financial support, is one of Thailand’s most revered religious sites. The scandal involving the abbot has shaken the local community and raised concerns about the misuse of temple funds for personal gain.
As the case progresses through court proceedings, P.D.W. remains in his monastic robes, awaiting further legal action that may determine his fate and the implications of his actions on the temple and its followers.
